Services - Colposcopy
What is Colposcopy?
A colposcopy is a procedure that allows doctors to evaluate the
possible causes of an abnormal Pap smear in women.
Who should have a Colposcopy?
Women who have an abnormal Pap smear should discuss with their
doctor whether a colposcopy is needed for further evaluation.
How is a Colposcopy Performed?
A colposcopy is very similar to having a Pap smear except that
the doctor looks through a special microscope to get an up-close
look at the surface of the cervix. By putting a series of solutions
on the cervix with a cotton swab, the doctor can see if any areas
are abnormal and might require further testing, such as a biopsy.
A biopsy takes a very small sample of cells from the surface of
the cervix. After numbing the area with a topical gel, the biopsy
is done with a small tool. The specimens are sent to a laboratory
for further evaluation. Further treatment is determined based on
the results of the biopsy.
How do I prepare for a Colposcopy?
Prior to scheduling the colposcopy, the doctor will discuss the
reasons for having the procedure, what to expect during and after
the procedure, and what additional treatments may be necessary.
There are no special preparations.
How long does a Colposcopy take?
The entire procedure takes about 1/2 hour.
How can I schedule my Colposcopy?
